 FITS 2009

11 days after the Jazz Festival ends, another big annual event opens up and bring a lot of people together: the International Theater Festival. At it's 16th edition, the organizers have chosen to call it “inOvations”. According to the artistic director Constantin Chiriac, this name was chosen because it also has “ovations” included in it, and “it is symbolic for the 2009 festival aims to build it's self through innovation ”. Growing each year, Sibiu has become the biggest theater festival in Eastern Europe. In the recent years it had drawn together about 350 companies and groups from 70 countries.

This year the festival will run for 11 days with a full schedule of theater, dance, street performance, installations, concerts and workshops. 358 of events from 70 countries will take place in halls, parks, on the streets, in interior gardens, anywhere you could think of.

One of the great things about this edition will be the premiere of Ovidiu's "Metamorphosis", directed by Silviu Purcarete and presented by The "Radu Stanca" National Theatre, Theatre D'Esch-Sur-Alzette and  Centre Culturel de Rencontre Abbaye de Neumünster. This is a mega-performance originally made in Luxembourg in 2007 for the Great Region - Capital Cultures of Europe programs. With "Metamorphoses" Purcarete succeeds in grasping the core of Ovidiu's poems and conquers their essence, creating a complete sensory experience, a disturbing and memorable performance, presented to the Romanian public with a new cast on the 28th and 29th of May.

This edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival hosts some of the most important theatre stage directors of international level, giving the Romanian audience extraordinary performances based on classical texts.

As I told you earlier, the festival will delight your cultural hunger with more than just classical theater. You'll have workshops, street performances, music, dance, and all kind of other small treats.

As far as music goes, The International Theatre from Sibiu is preparing us two special moments of fado, traditional Portuguese music, with the group Fado Português (Portugal) and Stockholm Lisboan Project (Portugal/Sweden), a project that concentrates on the creation of musical ports between north and south, taking on Portuguese music, as well as the Scandinavian one. Also, the Mexican-American group Tito & Tarantula, famous for hits life „After Dark", „Back to the House that Love Built", „Strange Face to Love" or „Angry Cockroaches", will perform for the first time in Romania, in this Festival from Sibiu.

There are much more to say about all the guests of the festival, but for that please go here to see the official program of Sibiu International Theater Festival 2009. You can also see the official promo video of the festival.
